Welcome to the University of Toronto Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Website!
Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a large multi-sited department with over 220 faculty located at six University of Toronto fully-affiliated teaching hospitals (Mount Sinai Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Women’s College Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital, Hospital for Sick Children) and 10 community-affiliated hospitals (Credit Valley Hospital, Markham-Stouffville Hospital, North York General Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital, Rouge Valley Health System, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Southlake Regional Health Centre, The Scarborough Hospital, Toronto East General Hospital, Trillium Health Centre). We are the largest academic department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Canada. Our teaching commitment comprises approximately 250 undergraduate medical students each year during their clinical clerkship, 61 residents in obstetrics and gynaecology, and 57 fellows in a number of subspecialty areas.
We offer training in three Royal College accredited subspecialty programs including Gynaecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and Maternal-Fetal Medicine as well as Fellowships in Minimally-Invasive Surgery, Urogynaecology and Pelvic Floor Disorders, Reproductive Biology and Mature Women’s Health. Our research programs are extensive and diverse across all of the research pillars as defined by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. We have developed a major focus on women’s health and the early origins of health and disease as new and emerging areas of research and education. The research expertise of the Department is located primarily in the Research Institutes of the fully-affiliated Hospitals. Of particular importance is the close collaboration with the many Research Institutes within the University of Toronto Academic Health Science Centre. Our administrative home is at 92 College Street, but we are very much decentralized with a major academic presence at each of the teaching hospitals included on this website.
The Department makes a significant contribution locally, nationally and internationally in the area of Social Responsibility through individual actions, leadership within organizations, and programmatic development. In particular, through its participation in AMPATH (Academic Model for provision of Access to Health Care Consortium), the Department has established the framework for a long-term commitment to enhancing clinical care, research and teaching in Western Kenya.
