Medical Students Learn More About ObGyn Residency Program

Residency panel answering questions

Residency panel answering questions

At the end of October, our department hosted a CaRMS information night for medical students interested in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology residency program. As the largest Obstetrics and Gynaecology department in Canada, our programs attract a number of interested trainees who wish to complete their medical education through residency, fellowship or continuing studies. Through the CaRMS application process, the residency program accepts up to ten Canadian residents (CMG) and two international residents (IMG) each year. This is in addition to any sponsored trainees.

New this year, the residency program will offer a CMG spot jointly with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM). The candidate would spend half of their PGY1-5 training at NOSM in Thunder Bay and surrounding northern communities, with the other half of their training occurring in Toronto.

The night was hosted by our Residency Program Director Dr. Michèle Farrugia who introduced the medical students to the compelling world of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Farrugia was joined by a panel of faculty and residents who explained why they chose UofT ObGyn. The panel was composed of Drs. Jessica Smith (PGY4), Eliane Shore (Assistant Professor), Evan Tannenbaum (PGY5) and Chelsie Warshafsky (PGY4). A question and answer period followed, allowing medical students to learn more about the program from those who have actively participated in it.

The event hosted medical students from a number of domestic and international universities from places such as Australia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya and Nigeria. The CaRMS application process begins with file review in late November 2019, followed by interviews in late January 2020.
