On June 5, 2019, the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre's Minimally Invasive Surgery Division and Urogynecology Division presented three UofT ObGyn residents with awards for excellence in their field. Dr. Brenna Swift (PGY5) was the recipient of the Kay Lie Excellence in MIS Surgery Award, and Drs. Humara Edell (PGY5) and Melissa Walker (PGY5) were the recipients of the Ted Morgan Vaginal Surgery Award.

In 2018, the MIS/Urogynecology group at Sunnybrook decided to honour two mentors who have had a profound influence on our careers and for patients. We named these awards after them.

Dr. Kay Lie has been instrumental in establishing the MIS/Urogynecology Program at the University of Toronto. He was the first to perform laparoscopic salpingectomies and encouraged the development of Minimally Invasive Surgery in Gynecology. Over the last 20 years, he has trained a countless number of residents and fellows to perform laparoscopic ovarian cystectomies and hysterectomies. The Kay Lie Award was established to recognize a resident whom the Sunnybrook MIS Division feels has the most potential for MIS surgery and their care for patients emulates the excellent care that Dr. Lie provided to his patients. The winner this year was Dr. Brenna Swift!

Dr. John Edwin (Ted) Morgan is considered to be the “Grandfather of Urogynecology” in Canada. For over 40 years he has tirelessly trained many residents and clinical fellows in the art of vaginal surgery, advocating for and transforming the lives of many patients who suffer from urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and other bladder conditions. The Dr. Ted Morgan Award was established to recognize a senior resident whom the Sunnybrook Urogynecology Division feels has the most potential for vaginal surgery and emulates the care that Dr. Morgan provided his patients. This year, there was a tie! The winners were Dr. Humara Edell and Dr. Melissa Walker!
