Dr. Kellie Murphy appointed Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Murphy will begin a five-year term on Jan. 1, 2024

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kellie Murphy as Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for a five-year term beginning January 1, 2024.

Murphy is Professor and Vice Chair of Research and Innovation in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and is cross-appointed to the Institute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. She is Head of Clinical Research for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Mount Sinai Hospital and a Clinician Scientist at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute.

Murphy obtained an MD at the University of Wisconsin — Madison before completing her residency in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and an MSc in epidemiology at the Graduate School of Public Health of Columbia University. She completed additional maternal-fetal medicine residency training at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.

A maternal-fetal medicine specialist, Murphy is internationally recognized for her life-saving antenatal corticosteroid therapy research. ​She has successfully led and participated in numerous large international, multi-centre and practice-changing randomized clinical trials. Murphy has been recognized for her commitment to education and mentorship with teaching awards, including the Mary Hannah Award for Distinguished Research in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Chair’s Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Teaching, and the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellows Teaching Award. Murphy is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and a Diplomat of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. 

Murphy will build on the successes of our current Chair, Dr. John Kingdom, who will be stepping down at the end of the year following two successful terms beginning in 2013.
